Yorkton Airport Terminal Building Replacement Project

The goal of the Airport Terminal Building Replacement project is to replace the existing terminal amenities in a modernized, cost-efficient manner. The existing 2,277 sq ft terminal building is a holdover from the construction of the original war-time airport and is well past its useful life. The new building is proposed to be 2,552 sq ft in size, and provides space for a pilot lounge, reception desk, six leasable office spaces, airport superintendent office, runway electrical systems and building-related mechanical, public washrooms and a 490 sq ft attached garage, which will store the runway inspection vehicle and also fire suppression foam.

City Council approved the Airport Terminal Building Replacement project and awarded the tender for the Yorkton Airport Terminal Building to SveinCo Developments Ltd. at the February 26 Council Meeting. The new Terminal Building will not only help to welcome visitors to our City, but will also support economic development throughout Yorkton and the surrounding region.

The Federally-certified Yorkton Regional Airport is an active hub with as many as 13,000 annual, and an average of 36 daily, aircraft movements. It has two runways, joining taxiways, a public apron, a terminal building, developable lots available for lease, general aviation hangers, and six tenant businesses employing over 60 people. The airport is host to an extensive range of aviation services, including:

  • Aerial mapping
  • Aircraft maintenance
  • Aircraft sales
  • Aircraft storage
  • Air taxi services
  • Aviation fuel sales
  • Cargo transportation
  • Charter airplanes and charter helicopters
  • Crop spraying
  • Forest/wildfire response including water bombing
  • Flight training
  • Medical patient transfer services
  • Pilot accommodations
  • Pilot certification
  • Royal Canadian Air Force use for training, emergency response & VIP air transportation
  • Recreational aircraft operations, including hangars.

  • How much are the taxes going to for this project. Just curious

    Thank you for your question! The total estimated cost of the Terminal Building Project (including the construction of the new building, demolition of the existing building, site prep, utilities, relocating runway electrical, new fence and gate, parking lot, and airside paving) is approximately $2.317 million. The airport has $850,000 in reserves to go towards the project and will be taking out an internal loan from the City for the remaining $1.467 million. City Council awarded the tender for the Yorkton Airport Terminal Building for $1,625,660. The remaining costs are an estimate.

  • This building has been need for many years and I'm glad to see this project moving forward. I do have a few questions and many they are highlighted somewhere: Will the road/ parking lot be paved and will the lot be landscaping along with new lighting on the main road and within the parking lot?

    Thank you for your question! The Airport Terminal Building Replacement project includes a paved parking lot with lights and landscaping. The project does not include any paving of roads or additional lights outside of the parking lot.
