Why is this program being introduced?

From 2011 to 2021, the city observed a 57% increase of in-city refuse during the months of May to October relative to the rest of the year. During the summer of 2022, waste audits were completed of in-city refuse and we found that organic material (yard and food waste) made up 52% of the total refuse by weight.

Why is a Curbside Organic Waste Collection Program Important?

    1. It extends the life of the Landfill by saving space
Since 2011, we have observed an average increase in tonnage of 1200 tonnes during the month of May to October.
    2. Reduction of greenhouse gases
Methane is produced when materials decompose in a landfill. Without oxygen, decomposition happens anaerobically which means that methane is produced. Methane is a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide and contributes to climate change.
    3. Development of valuable and useful end product
With proper management organic material will be turned into compost which can be used for future projects.

Will this affect the scheduled garbage pickup?

The Curbside Organics pickup day will be on the same schedule as your garbage and recycling pickup. Residents selected to take part in the Curbside Organics Pilot Program will receive a bin, similar to your garbage bin, and that is what you will roll out to the edge of your property for pickup.

What happens with the bins at the end of the pilot project?

Bins will be collected at the end of the project timeline.

What if a resident chooses to not participate?

For the purpose of the pilot project, if a resident is adamant that they do not want to participate, this will be recorded and the service will be offered to another residence.

Where do I place bins on the roadside for collection?

Bins will be placed adjacent to your garbage bin, but there must be at least 1 meter between them.

Will there still be drop-off locations for organics?

Yes, free organics drop-off will still be available at the landfill compost pile and SaskAbilities Enterprises during regular business hours.

What will happen to the food and yard waste once it's collected?

After collection, the organic material will be taken to the landfill where it will be mixed with other compostable organics and eventually turned into compost.

Can I line my compost & organics bin?

It's not required, but you can bag your material using compostable bags.

Where does one get compostable bags for food waste?

All of the major grocery stores carry them. Anywhere that carries garbage bags likely has a compostable bag option.
