SaskAbilities to Continue Operating Yorkton Transit

As Yorkton Transit gets ready for a new on-demand service in 2027, SaskAbilities will continue as the City’s transit operator.

The City completed a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) this summer to select an operator for Yorkton Transit. After reviewing submitted proposals, the City found that SaskAbilities offered the best overall value and City Council awarded the contract on August 31.

Continuing with SaskAbilities provides consistency for riders as Yorkton Transit goes through a major change. SaskAbilities will continue providing transit operations while also supporting the move from fixed routes to a new on-demand system that brings conventional and accessible transit together.

The new service is planned to launch in January 2027 using the Blaise transit platform. Instead of buses following set routes and schedules, riders will be able to request trips based on when and where they need to travel. Trips can be booked ahead of time or requested in real time.

Keeping SaskAbilities as the operator will provide continuity during this transition, while the City focuses on making Yorkton Transit more flexible, accessible and responsive to the needs of riders.
